The future of electric battery technology is here. For the first time ever, Mazda is offering a fully hybrid model for the United States market: the Mazda CX-90 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). This full-size three-row SUV can travel short distances on fully electric power before it switches back to gas for the rest of the distance.
The Mazda 2024 lineup also includes mild hybrid versions of the Mazda CX-90 full-size SUV, plus potentially other models in the future. Every time you press down on the brakes, a mild hybrid vehicle automatically regenerates power to improve the efficiency of the internal combustion engine. No plug in is actually required. However, a mild hybrid engine almost always runs on gas and only uses electricity as support.
The Mazda CX-90 PHEV
The CX-90 PHEV features both a 2.5-liter engine and 68-kilowatt electric motor that work together to deliver 323 horsepower. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and full all-wheel drive capabilities. The intelligent all-wheel drive system offers up to five different drive modes depending on the conditions or situation: normal, sport, off-road, towing, and EV. For such a large vehicle, the Mazda CX-90 has surprisingly nimble handling and cornering for traveling on Ann Arbor streets. When properly equipped, it can haul a maximum of 3,500 pounds at a time.
Even though it's a relatively new addition to the lineup, the CX-90 plug-in hybrid still comes with all the great luxury features you would expect from the Mazda name, including leather-trimmed and heated front seats, a power sliding glass moonroof, push-button start, and three-zone automatic climate control. A 10.3-inch touch-screen display adorns the dashboard with Bluetooth connectivity, USB-C ports, HD radio, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The Premium and Premium Plus trims also add a bevy of other luxury features, including a 12-speaker Bose surround sound system, second-row captain’s chair, Nappa leather-trimmed seating, in-dash navigation, wireless phone charging, and a larger 12.3-inch center display.
The Mazda CX-90 has seating capacity for up to eight passengers. With its generous interior space, even the back two rows have 39.4 inches and 30.4 inches of leg room, respectively. The cargo capacity is approximately 15 cubic feet with rear seats up and 74.2 cubic feet with all rear seats folded.
Range
The Mazda CX-90 PHEV provides many of these benefits. Because it can roam up to 26 miles on a single charge, typical driver can travel to work or perform many daily activities throughout Sylvania without needing to use much of any fuel at all. For those longer trips, the CX-90 has 490 miles of total range between gas and electric power on Detroit roads. This means it can go approximately 56 miles on a single gallon of gas. The CX-90 plug-in is compatible with most public and in-house chargers. A 120-volt Level 1 charging cable comes standard; it can fully charge your vehicle in approximately 11 hours. Using a 240-volt Level 2 AC charger instead, the CX-90 can go from 20 percent to 80 percent charge in less than three hours.
Why Choose a Hybrid Vehicle?
Hybrid vehicles have several distinct advantages that make them appealing to buy. Their engines typically deliver a smooth and quiet ride when you're on Perrysburg streets. Because they’re made with fewer parts, they may require less maintenance over their natural lifespan. And with the cost of batteries falling rapidly, you can now save lots of money from the lower fuel costs of a hybrid or electric vehicle compared with a standard gas-only vehicle.
